How to Add Volume to Type 2 (Wavy) Hair

When your hair is naturally wavy, you can achieve many styles. But, the one thing you might not be able to do is achieve voluminous locks. If you're looking to add some movement and body into your hair, you've come to the right place.

Do I Have Type 2 Hair?

Type 2 hair is wavy hair that makes an "S" shape and lacks volume at the roots. To further break down this hair type, there are three classifications, including:

  • Type 2a: Very loose, fine waves that are easy to weigh down.
  • Type 2b: More defined waves that form an "S" shape. The hair is often flat at the scalp and more defined at the mid-lengths and ends.
  • Type 2c: Clearly defined, coarse waves that may be frizzy and difficult to style.

Add Volume to Your Type 2 Tresses

No matter your hair type or subtype, we're here with five tried-and-true ways to increase volume in your type 2 tresses. Check out each of the methods below.

Shape It Up

When your locks are wavy, you need a haircut that compliments them. Your best bet is to go to a stylist that's worked with wavy hair and knows how to cut hair in a way that enhances your waves. The stylist will likely add layers and texture, shaping your hair to mimic the illusion of volume.

Wrap Your Hair Up to Dry

Type 2 hair has heavy roots, but that doesn't mean you can't do anything about it.  Instead of allowing your hair to dry hanging down, you can let your hair dry while it's wrapped up on top of your head. Doing this takes some of the weight off of the roots, increasing your hair's volume.

Invest in Volumizing Products

Lack of volume is a problem for many, spawning the formulation of countless volumizing products. These products have specialized ingredients, like vitamin C, vitamin B5, vitamin E, and some oils. Go on the hunt for volumizing products and try several to see if they work for your hair.

Try O-Clipping

Have you ever heard of O-clipping? If you haven't, you're missing out! O-clipping is a clipping method that uses duckbill clips at the roots to add volume manually. All you have to do is place the duckbill clips at the roots of your damp hair, let your hair dry, and voila! You will have instant volume and fullness at your roots.

Thoroughly Cleanse Your Scalp

Another great way to create volume in Type 2 hair is by cleansing your scalp thoroughly. When sebum (scalp oil) begins to build up on your scalp and travel down your strands, your hair becomes weighed down. So, the next time you shampoo your hair, focus mainly on your scalp and roots, massaging thoroughly before rinsing. This will keep your hair light, flowy, and full of volume.

If you've been looking for a way to take your wavy hair from flat to voluminous, these five tips will help tremendously.
