How to Add Volume to Type 3 (Curly) Hair

It is every natural-haired person’s dream to wake up with big and fluffy hair. Unfortunately, even with type 3 (curly hair), it takes a lot of maneuvering to achieve this. Here are five tried and tested tips to give your hair some volume.

What is Type 3 Hair?

Type 3 hair is full of curls. The curl pattern can either be loose or very tight. People with Type 3 hair often have a mixture of different textures.

There are three variations of type 3 hair:

  • Type 3A: Big and loose curls that resemble the shape of an S.

  • Type 3B: Dry and tight curls which are usually coarse and dense.

  • Type 3C: Tighter curls that are tighter than 3b curls. They also have more volume than the other types but are also known to frizz more as well.

Adding Volume to your Type 3 Hair

Naturally, curls are voluminous. Yet, there are some days when your hair might be disobedient and fall flat. Whether you have 3A, 3B, or 3C curls, it is possible to add some more height to your hair for a “Big hair, don’t care” look. We’ll tell you how in the following sections.

Fluff or Pick Out Your Roots

The easiest way to achieve a voluminous look is by adding height to your roots. If you have loose curls, use your fingers to lift the roots of your hair. For a fuller look, toss your hair side to side while lifting the roots of your hair with your fingers. If your curls are tighter, a pick will do the trick. While holding sections of hair upward, gently use the pick to comb out the first inch or two of your roots. This will give you instant volume that lasts all day!

Use A Diffuser To Dry Your Hair

After applying your products to your damp hair, use a diffuser to dry your hair. Diffusers work by adding heat straight to the roots, causing them to expand as they dry. The best way to get your desired look is to flip your hair forward and dry it upside down with the diffuser. Once the hair is dry, you can then fluff or pick out your roots for even more volume.

Trying Clarifying Your Hair

Clarifying your hair is crucial if you want it to look voluminous. Many use hair products every day, and these products may cause buildup on the scalp or the surface of your hair. This buildup weighs down on both the roots and shaft of the hair. Choose a deep cleansing shampoo without sulfates – it’ll cleanse your hair deeply without stripping it of all moisture.

Cut Down on Products

Sometimes clarifying your hair alone won’t work because right after cleansing your hair, you reapply the products. Some products, when applied too heavily, weigh your curls down. So, consider cutting down on the number of products you use or the amount of product you apply at a time.

We encourage you to try one or more of the above tips to increase your hair’s volume and banish flat hair for good.
