Why Does My Hair Always Stick Up?

No one wants hair like Alfalfa’s from The Little Rascals. That’s why it’s such a drag when your hair acts like it has a mind of its own, reaching for the clouds at any given moment. Wondering why this is happening? We’ll share the main culprits behind this hair issue and point you toward products that could help. Let’s get right into it!

The Main Things That Cause Hair to Stick Up

Several things can cause your hair to stick up, and you need to know which one is to blame before you move forward. Here are the main things that cause hair to stand on end:

Static Electricity

Static electricity is one of the most common reasons hair sticks up. If your hair sticks up in the following instances, chances are you’re dealing with static electricity:

When something like a scarf, hairbrush, hat, or coat rubs against your hair.

During the winter season, when it’s drier outside.

When you wash your hair with a deep cleansing shampoo.

When you use metal hair tools.

How to Fix It

To counter static, ensure that your hair is well-moisturized. Hydrated hair is much less susceptible to static than dry hair. Daily Dose Leave-In Conditioner and Daily Dose Deep Conditioner are deeply hydrating. They’ll eliminate static right away, leaving your hair smooth, shiny, and much more manageable.

Dryness or Damage

Dryness and damage are two big reasons for hair that just won’t behave. When your hair’s structure is worn away or roughed up, your strands will catch onto each other. And this will happen no matter how much you try to smooth them down.

How to Fix It

Address dryness by upping the ante on your hair hydration routine. Start with a deep cleansing shampoo, follow that up with a nutrient-dense deep conditioner, and finish off with a leave-in. If your hair is still thirsty, add a moisturizer as well. As for damage, use reparative deep conditioners and hair masks. If the damage is so severe that your hair is breaking or badly split, you’ll need to cut away the damage and give it TLC with protein or moisture treatments.

Harsh Hair Products

Hair products that are high in harsh ingredients like sulfates, drying alcohols, and more can do a number on your hair in the worst way. And the drier and more damaged your hair becomes, the more it may stick up. Also, the way some products are formulated simply may not work with your hair.

How to Fix It

Switch out any products that contain harsh or otherwise problematic ingredients. And if it seems like a given product isn’t working for your hair, stop using it.

Product Buildup

Product buildup can also cause your hair to stick up. When hair product remnants aren’t properly washed out of the hair, they will accumulate on the hair shaft and make it impossible for your other products to work properly. If you use a lot of hydrating and smoothing products and they never seem to work, product buildup could be your issue.

How to Fix It

To fix product buildup, wash your hair very well with a deep cleansing/clarifying shampoo. It could take a couple of washes to get all the buildup off. After that, ensure your hair is moisturized and conditioned, and proceed with the rest of your hair care routine.

So, there you have it - why your hair always sticks up and what to do about it. If you haven’t already done so, we encourage you to check out Daily Dose Leave-in and Deep Conditioner. They can fix many of the issues contributing to hair that sticks up.
