Haircare Hacks for Type 2 Hair

Although it’s a pleasure to look at, wavy hair can be an absolute pain to maintain. And even if you do have a solid hair regimen in place, there’s always room for improvement. For any girl who wants to put her best waves forward, it’s crucial to learn all you can about type 2 hair care. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of haircare hacks every wavy girl can use.

What is Type 2 Hair?

Type 2 hair is classified as wavy. The waves may range from barely-there to clearly defined. There are three subtypes of type 2 hair, and they include:

  • Type 2A - Waves that are so loose that they may not be visible when wet. These waves are especially prone to flatness at the roots.

  • Type 2B - Waves that are neither loose nor defined. They are more voluminous than 2A waves.

  • Type 2C - Waves with a defined S shape. They are the frizziest and most voluminous waves of them all.

Type 2 Haircare Hacks

Now that you know for sure what type 2 hair is, let’s get into some hacks that can help you fine-tune your wavy haircare routine:

Don’t Apply Conditioner to Your Roots

Conditioner is full of oils, creams, and other weighty ingredients that can make type 2 roots limp. So, if your waves seem to be lifeless at the roots, do yourself a favor and stop applying conditioner to your roots. Instead, apply it starting at your mid-lengths and focus it on your ends. These are the oldest, most damage-prone areas of your hair.

Note: This hack also applies to your daily leave-in conditioner.

Embrace the Scrunch

You may be tempted to smooth products through your waves to define them, but that won't do. If you’re looking to bring out your waves’ texture, scrunching them is the way to go. This hand motion reinforces your natural wave pattern. All you need to do is dispense your wave-defining product into your hands, rub your hands together, flip your hair over, and then scrunch in an upward motion.

Diffuse for Volume

Voluminous hairstyles can be difficult to achieve for wavy girls - that is, if you haven’t discovered the benefits of diffusing. A diffuser attachment disperses heat in a way that volumizes your waves. Diffuse your roots for some added height at the crown or diffuse your entire head of hair.

Finger Detangle

Detangling your hair with brushes and combs can result in snagging and breakage along your hair shaft. The gentlest way to detangle your waves is to spray your wet hair down with a detangler and use your fingers to work through the knots. Finger detangling also helps to keep your natural wave pattern intact. Only use brushes and combs when absolutely necessary.

Now you know several hair hacks to make styling and caring for your waves easier. We hope that the information in this article is helpful to you on your wavy hair journey!
