How to use Leave-in Conditioner for Type 1 Hair
Type 1 (straight) hair tends to be a bit oilier than others; it can also develop dry ends, frizz, and flyaways. One of the best ways to combat all of these issues simultaneously is to use leave-in conditioner. In this article, we’ll fill you in on exactly how to use leave-in conditioner for type 1 hair.
How to Use Leave-in Conditioner for Type 1 Hair
If you’ve never used a leave-in conditioner on your Type 1 hair, that’s okay. In the following sections, you’ll find step-by-step instructions for how to use leave-in conditioner on your straight locks.
Step 1: Choose Your Leave-in
Before you can use a leave-in conditioner for Type 1 hair, you need to choose the right one for the job. Your straight strands allow your natural hair oils to slide right down the shaft, which can lead to oily hair. Because of this, it likely doesn’t have significant issues with moisture, except for the ends. These can dry out and split if not taken care of.
Heavy leave-in conditioners can weigh down your straight tresses, so you should look for one that is lightweight and water-based to prevent this. You may also want to consider formulas that add body or heat protection, depending on your specific hair needs.
Step 2: Wash Your Hair
Before you use your chosen leave-in, you must first wash your hair using your usual shampoo and conditioner. Leave-ins work best on clean hair, as clean hair is ready to accept product better than hair coated in other products.
Step 3: Get Rid of Excess Moisture
Once your hair is clean, squeeze the excess moisture out gently, then towel-dry. Make sure your hair is not dripping when you’re ready to apply the leave-in since it will run off your hair along with the water. Damp hair is best for the next step.
Step 4: Apply Your Leave-in
Now it’s time to apply your leave-in conditioner. Hold the bottle about 6 inches from your hair and spritz the ends. For more localized applications, you can also spray some onto the palms of your hands, rub them together, and then run them through your hair.
As we mentioned earlier, straight hair is more prone to oiliness than other types, so the ends are likely all that require the leave-in. Focus on this area to reduce split ends. You can go a bit higher if you have frizz or flyaways to deal with but avoid the scalp. Use only as much product as directed on the bottle to avoid a greasy look and feel.
Step 5: Detangle & Style
Once the leave-in conditioner is applied to your liking, brush out any tangles with a wide-tooth comb. Start at the bottom and work your way up to avoid pulling and breakage. When the tangles are gone, you can style your hair as usual.
Type 1 hair can be difficult to deal with since it can be a mix of oily and dry. It also lacks the body of some other types and doesn’t hold a curl very well. Adding a leave-in conditioner to your normal hair care routine can eliminate these issues and leave you with beautiful locks you can’t wait to show off!
