Most of the time, your hair mask’s package instructions may say something like, “Apply to the hair, wait for 3-5 minutes, and rinse thoroughly.” It sounds simple enough until you get to the product application part. How exactly are you supposed to apply the hair mask? That’s what we’ll cover in this article.

If you want to reap the benefits of your hair mask, you must apply it correctly. Here are some tips to keep in mind during the product application process:

  • Ensure that your hair is clean before applying the hair mask. No matter how well you apply the hair mask, dirt, debris, and oils can stop the mask from penetrating your hair strands. Use a clarifying shampoo that cleanses the hair deeply, giving it a clean slate.

  • Use your fingers to slather the hair mask on, focusing on your ends. Since the ends are the oldest part of your hair, it’s essential to apply the mask there first. Once your ends are covered, apply the mask to the mid-lengths and roots. Some may experience root flatness - if you do, avoid your roots.

  • Smooth or comb the hair mask through. Once you have the product on your hair, it’s time to work on product distribution. You’ll smooth and/or comb the hair mask through to ensure every strand is covered. Any strands left out will not receive the benefits of the mask. Your hair should begin to take on the color of the mask. If it hasn’t, apply more product.

What to Do After Applying Your Hair Mask

Achieving a flawless hair mask application is great, but it’s not the only thing to be concerned with. After applying your hair mask, it’s time to decide how long to leave it on. Most of the time, the time recommendation will be somewhere on your hair mask packaging. It’s usually between 3 and 30 minutes. But if you’ve made your own DIY hair mask, you get to decide how long you’ll leave it on (the generally accepted limit is about 1 hour).

Some like to leave their hair masks in overnight. Before you do that, read this first.

Next, decide whether to let the hair mask process in the open air or under a hooded dryer. If your hair is in relatively good condition and has a balanced porosity, you probably don’t need to sit under a hooded dryer. But if your hair is damaged or has very low porosity (it doesn’t easily absorb product), we recommend covering your hair with a plastic cap and sitting under a hooded dryer for the processing time (up to 30 minutes).

Once the time is up, rinse the hair mask out of your hair and move on with the rest of your hair routine.

Note: If your hair smells or feels sticky to the touch, you’ll need to shampoo it (choose a moisturizing shampoo for this step).
